Lo Chan Peng in the Dual Exhibition “Whispers of History” at Enlighten Gallery

“Memory and history intertwine, much as the speaker and the writer do during dictation.” — Pierre Nora, Realms of Memory

What is commonly received as “history” has long meant official, national narrative — and has often become a mainstream discourse that conceals dissenting voices. Thanks to modern media, the plurality of collective memory has made room for once-marginal, individual histories to surface as a contemporary landscape of their own. In the dual exhibition “Whispers of History,” Peng Si and Lo Chan Peng — both painters who drew notice in their student years and came of age as Taiwan opened politically — trace, each in his own way, the making and transmission of memory. The exhibition opens at Enlighten Gallery at 3 pm on 17 September.
